For me to put together a show, it’s essentially now making like a Tumblr … there’s a democracy to curating; you can call it curating or you can call it aggregating, but that’s what everybody does now. They put things together. They gather things, they aggregate things, then they put them together and they publish them, broadcast them. There’s a good joke: there’s a couple at a party, and one says ‘what do you do?’ and the other replies, ‘I curate children’s birthday parties.’ And that’s where curation is.

Summer Residency at South Square Gallery for Emerging Artists:

South Square Gallery invites proposals from emerging artists for its summer residency. For the duration of August and September 2013, the gallery space will be offered as a live-in studio for artists to research and produce new work whilst engaging with the gallery visitors. We are particularly interested in hearing from artists who have a critically engaged practice, are keen to interact with a public audience and whose approach to making work would suit an open studio setting.

Nice introductory article by Prof. Naughton about the often hidden power of algorithms. An interesting example at the end: how an algorithmic news selection is considered to be more objective than a human selection, despite the fact that the algorithm was written by a human. It reminds me of Claire Bishop’s erroneous assertion that code is inscrutable by humans, made in that ArtForum article from earlier in the year.

The Penthouse is a new artist-led space in the Manchester NQ. They have an open day on 13th December, and the deadline for sound submissions is 5th December - so now is the time to get involved.

The Penthouse aims to maintain a rough ‘hands on’ approach seeing artists getting their hands dirty with materials and heads dirty with ideas. We encourage experimentation, risk and honesty.
